Periods & Contraception

Do you struggle with irregular periods, acne, excess facial hair, stubborn weight or fertility challenges?

Do you have heavy periods which leave you tired and drained every month?

Do you have severe debilitating period pains affecting the quality of your life? Have you had to take time off school/college/university/work because of this?

Do you struggle with your moods and emotions before a period and feel you’ve ‘lost control’? Is this affecting your personal and professional relationships?

At Sozo clinic, we specialise in helping women regain control over their cycles, energy, skin and mood — and finally feel like themselves again.

How does Sozo approach Periods and Contraception?

We provide a variety of contraceptive services, including the Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARCs).

We provide a full assessment and fit the contraceptive implant (Nexplanon) and can remove the device. We have an experienced doctor who will put you at ease and explain the full process during your consultation.

We also fit and remove coils, including hormonal (Mirena, Kyleena and Jaydess) and non-hormonal (copper) coils. We will fully counsel you on the procedure and our expert team are here to put you at ease during to fitting procedure.

Contraception:

Nexplanon:

Nexplanon is a small, flexible radiopaque (can be seen by x-ray) rod (4 cm/matchstick size) inserted under the skin of the inner upper arm.  This provides over 99% effective, long-acting (up to 3 years) contraception.  It works by releasing the progestogen hormone etonogestrel, which prevents ovulation and alters cervical mucus to prevent pregnancy.  It does not contain the hormone oestrogen.

Mirena:

Mirena (52mg levonorgestrel), is a small, T-shaped intrauterine system (IUS) that sits in your womb and may have been prescribed to you for one or more of the following:

  • To prevent pregnancy for up to 8 years.
  • Treat Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) for up to 5 years.
  • To be used as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for up to 4 years.

If symptoms do not return after 5 years of use, Mirena can be considered for continued use for up to 8 years for HMB.

Kyleena:

Kyleena (19.5 mg levonorgestre) is a small, T-shaped intrauterine system (IUS) that releases a low dose of progesterone locally into the uterus, providing highly effective contraception (over 99% effective) for up to 5 years. It is commonly used for long-term pregnancy prevention and can be used regardless of whether a woman has previously given birth.  This has lower hormone levels compared to the Mirena.

Jaydess:

Jaydess (13.5 mg levonorgestrel) is a small, T-shaped, long-acting reversible intrauterine system (IUS) that prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years by releasing progestogen, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the uterine lining. It is over 99% effective and can be used regardless of whether a woman has previously given birth.  This has lower hormone levels compared to the Mirena and the Jaydess.

Copper Coil:

The copper coil (intrauterine device or IUD) is a highly effective non-hormonal, long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) that prevents pregnancy for 5–10 years. It works immediately upon insertion by releasing copper to disable sperm and can also act as emergency contraception if fitted within 5 days of unprotected sex.
