What is Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)?
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is defined as distressing physical, psychological and behavioural symptoms that occur in the latter half of the menstrual cycle and significantly regress or disappear after you get your period. 4 in 10 women (40%) experience symptoms of PMS, and in the UK only 20% of women with PMS seek medical help.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe, chronic medical condition—far beyond “bad PMS”—affecting up to 5% of women during the luteal phase (1–2 weeks before menstruation). It causes debilitating emotional and physical symptoms, including intense anger, depression, and hopelessness, which typically subside within days of your period starting.
