Steroid Injections

Fast, Targeted Relief for Joint and Soft Tissue Pain

Steroid (or “cortisone”) injections have been used safely for decades to treat pain and inflammation in joints, tendons, and soft tissues. At Sozo Clinic, we use precision-guided injections to deliver targeted relief — so you can move better, feel better, and get back to doing what you love….. quickly!

What Are Steroid Injections?

A steroid injection involves injecting a powerful anti-inflammatory medication — usually a corticosteroid directly into the area that’s causing pain. We often combine the steroid with a small amount of local anaesthetic for immediate relief. The steroid then begins to reduce inflammation over the next few days.

Steroid injections Do NOT “cure” the underlying condition — but they calm things down, create space for healing, and make rehab or movement much easier.

When Are Steroid Injections Useful?

Steroid injections can be very effective for short-to-medium term relief of:

  • Joint pain – e.g. knee, hip, shoulder, wrist, ankle
  • Tendon inflammation (tendinitis/tendinopathy) – e.g. tennis elbow, rotator cuff, plantar fasciitis
  • Bursitis – such as trochanteric bursitis (hip) or subacromial bursitis (shoulder)
  • Nerve impingement – e.g. carpal tunnel or sciatica (epidural-type injections)

Why Choose Sozo for Your Injection?

At Sozo Clinic, we believe a steroid injection should never be a rushed, one-size-fits-all treatment. That’s why every injection is:

  • Ultrasound-guided – for accurate, safe, and effective placement
  • Consultant-led – performed by expert clinicians with MSK and surgical experience
  • Performed in clean-air facilities – not just basic treatment rooms
  • Part of a wider plan – we always discuss rehab, pacing, and long-term solutions with you

We don’t just mask pain — we help you manage it properly.

“But Aren’t Steroid Injections Bad for You? That’s what my doctor says!”

This is a fair and common question. You may have heard concerns about steroid injections being dangerous, overused, or only offering temporary relief. Here’s the truth:

Some concerns are valid — and at Sozo, we take them seriously:

  • Overuse: Repeated steroid injections in the same place over a short time can harm soft tissue or cartilage. We never over-inject.
  • Masking pain: If not part of a proper rehab plan, steroids can temporarily hide a problem rather than treat it.
  • Tendon risk: Injections into tendons (rather than around them) can weaken the tissue if done incorrectly. We always inject with precision and caution.
  • Systemic concerns: Some patients worry about steroids affecting blood sugar, bone density, or general health. These risks are very low with occasional local injections.

We only offer steroid injections when we believe they are the right choice for you, and we’ll always explain the risks, benefits, and alternatives.

What does the Procedure Involve?

Consultation

We’ll assess your condition, confirm the diagnosis, and talk you through the options.

Ultrasound scan

To find the exact location of inflammation or structural issues.

Injection

The steroid (with local anaesthetic) is injected under ultrasound guidance. Most procedures take under 10 minutes.

Aftercare

You’ll be given clear instructions on rest, activity, and follow-up.

Some patients feel relief within 24–48 hours; for others, it takes 5–7 days to fully kick in.

What Are the Risks?

Steroid injections are generally very safe when done properly. Potential (but uncommon) side effects include:

  • A flare-up of pain in the first 24 hours (this usually settles quickly)
  • Mild skin thinning or pigment change at the injection site
  • Temporary rise in blood sugar (especially in diabetics)
  • Very rare risk of infection (we use strict sterile techniques to prevent this)

We’ll talk through everything in detail before you proceed — so you feel confident and fully informed.
